What is the 40 Hours Devotion?
The 40 Hours Eucharistic Devotion is a beautiful and time honored tradition in the Catholic Church in which the Blessed Sacrament is exposed solemnly for approximately forty continuous hours of prayer.
The number forty is deeply biblical. It recalls the forty days of rain in Noah’s time, the forty years Israel spent in the desert, and the forty days of Christ’s fasting. Most especially, it recalls the time Our Lord’s sacred Body rested in the tomb before the Resurrection.
During these hours the parish gathers around Jesus truly present in the Eucharist and keeps watch with Him through silence, prayer, and song.
