Culture of Life

Holy Family's Culture of Life group is dedicated to the truth that ALL human life, from conception until natural death is a sacred gift from God. This group will – by prayer, education, and witness – bring all to an active commitment in building a Culture of Life within our families, parishes, communities, and country.

"I call heaven and earth today to witness against you: I have set you before life and death, the blessing and the curse. Choose life, then, that you and your descendants may live, by loving the Lord, your God, heeding his voice, and holding fast to him. For that will mean life for you, a long life for you to live on the land which the Lord swore he would give to your fathers Abraham, Issac and Jacob." - Deuteronomy 30:19-2

Baird Receives 2015 Defender of Life Award from Northeast Ohio Right to Life

Our very own Dick Baird was recognized as a Defender of Life at the Northeast Ohio Right to Life “Celebrate Life Dinner” on March 21, 2015 at St. George Antioch Church in Akron, Ohio.  Dick has been involved in the pro-life movement at Holy Family Parish in Stow since the mid 1980s when he went with a group from the church to Washington, DC for a pro-life march. Shortly after this, the group acquired the traveling image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the patroness of the pro-life movement, and used it to pray outside of an abortion center on West Market Street in Akron. This abortion mill closed down a few weeks later. A few years later, the group obtained the travelling image once more and prayed with it at the abortion center that had moved to East Market Street. That facility closed down by the end of the year. Dick was part of the first Life Chain in Akron where thousands of pro-life supporters lined Market Street from Akron City Hospital all the way to Summit Mall, and he has continued to participate every year since. He’s been to the March for Life in Washington, and participates with the yearly 24 hour vigil at his church every January. He is involved with almost every pro-life activity held through Holy Family Church, and continues to be a prayer witness outside of Akron area abortion facilities every week. He is comforted by Mother Teresa’s words: “God does not ask us to be successful, but to be faithful.” Dick is a true pro-life hero.

 2015 Planned Activities
  • An annual pro-life art an essay contest at Holy Family School, with prizes, for 5th-8th grades.
  • A pro-life memorial at Holy Family Church, jointly with the Stow-Hudson Knights of Columbus.
  • A school-based program for 6th-8th grades to introduce children to the (grade-appropriate) life issues, particularly abortion.
  • A pro-life 24-hour prayer vigil on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade every January.
  • Study groups on Pope John Paul II's encyclical, the Gospel of Life.
  • Two baby showers a year to benefit local pregnancy care facilities and a school to teach parents how to be parents.
  • A Life Chain on the streets of Akron to show that there are people who care about the unborn and their mothers.
  • Prayerful witness at abortion facility on 692 E. Market on Wednesdays 9-10am. (We believe that we, along with others, have been instrumental in closing two facilities on Market St.)
  • Discussion groups on end-of-life issues, euthanasia, and living wills.
  • Supporting Right to Life of Summit County and Diocesan pro-life activities.
  • Coordinating our information services, including this new webpage, on pro-life issues. A key component of this will be setting up database networks and providing resources so that interested individuals can make contact with key stakeholders.
  • Continuing efforts to focus pro-life education within Holy Family School.
  • Providing pro-life information, such as the Moses Law (where to drop off an unwanted newborn infant) in bus shelters and on buses in and around town and at college campuses.

I thank GOD today for the gift of my life and for the lives of my brothers and sisters. I know I am responsible for the unborn who cannot speak for themselves. I know that the most serious tragedy of our day is the tragedy of abortion. Today I commit myself never to be silent never to be passive never to be forgetful of the unborn. I commit myself to be active in the Pro-Life movement and never to stop defending life until all my brothers and sisters are protected and our nation once again becomes a nation with liberty and justice not just for some, but for all. Amen.
